With the current run of cold weather it's always nice to know the outside temperature so you are aware of any ice risk. It's also a handy tool in the summer months when its warm outside.
During my Portugal road trip last summer in the Mitsubishi, having an idea of the outside temperature was a a godsend when temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius and above.
So I hunted around on eBay to find a 3 in 1 clock/thermometer that I could fit to the Land Rover. I found one for around £10 that shows inside and outside temperature and has an inbuilt clock.
It also records the maximum and minimum daily/weekly/monthly temperature and runs from 2 AAA battery's which were included. Its very easy to install and comes with Velcro tabs to fix it to your dashboard, and a 10ft of wire to the outside sensor.
I positioned the display on top of the existing instrument pod, and then took the sensor wire inside the dash, and out of the existing hole where the speedo cable exits through the bulkhead. See the photo above.
I then run the sensor wire down the inside of the front wing and stuck the sensor just under the bonnet in front of the radiator.
To make sure I got an accurate outside temperature reading, I made sure the sensor was in the air flow when the Land Rover was moving, and that it won't be affected by any heat from the engine or radiator. The position of the sensor is shown on the right.
I took the Landy for a spin and everything is working as it should with a stable outside temperature reading.
So, that's another little gadget added which will be very handy on the next years road trip.
I can't wait!
